ZELL Company History

Since now almost 63 years Zell-Metall stands for technical plastic semi-finished components of the highest quality.

The history of the company began in 1949 when Dr. Rudolf Klepsch Sen. – an exiled Sudeten German from Aussig, Czechoslovakia – ventured to Zell am See to start a new life and leased the Brandstätter bronze foundry. At that time, the main business of the company ZELL-Metall was the production of bronze semi-finished products.

When Dr. Rudolf Klepsch sen. traveled to Holland in 1951, he became aware of the new material polyamide and immediately recognized that this would be competition to bronze and other non-ferrous metals. Then in 1955 Zell-Metall became the second company in Europe to start up extrusion and injection molding of polyamide. Five years later the company moved to its current location in Kaprun. Since then the product range has continuously increased, for example with POM in 1964, PET ten years later and PEEK in 2001. Several pioneering innovations, such as the first functioning oil-filled cast polyamide (1974) or the first nano-particle-filled POM and polyamide semi-finished products came from the company Zell-Metall.

The original core business, the production of bronze semi-finished materials became over the course of time ever less important and was finally ended in 1986. In addition, the injection molding department was transferred and from this, our associated company Seletec arose and is today located in Uttendorf.

Continuing growth led to the founding of many subsidiary companies in other countries. In 1960 the second production location of Zell-Metall in the form of Tecnoplast in southern Italy was founded. At the end of 2012 our subsidiary company ZL Engineering Plastics in Lenexa, Kansas was commissioned and this is our most recent production location. Further subsidiaries and logistics centers are in Zagreb and Los Angeles.

Company TEAM

The Landscape forms its people

Humans think, feel, act and react. Only humans can put machines or electronic “things” into motion. Humans transform ideas into products. In today´s electronic era even the most automated factory needs people. Modern machines are useless without people who understand their function and who are ready to commit themselves to successful, quality-oriented production.

People still determine the quality of output. People and their actions are affected by their environment. At first, the factories´ location far from large cities or the concentration of industries seems to be a handicap and it doesn’t seem logical that a high-tech factory could be located successfully in one of the most beautiful parts of the Austrian Alps, in the middle of Europe. However, if one considers that people are responsible for our success, it begins to make sense.

Beautiful surroundings appeal to the kind of people who appreciate the harmony and beauty of nature. People who work in these surroundings tend to find solutions. One could say that a positive mental attitude allows people to transform certain difficulties like distance to the user or transport to the markets into advantages. We believe our beautiful location encourages a positive mental attitude.

The innovative sandwich board has a core made of SymaLITE, while the cover layers consist of high-strength, thin and UV-resistant GMTex. In the production of MultiQ, the two sheet-like semi-finished products are welded together into 9 to 22 mm thick sandwich panels through the application of heat. The surface of the new composite is homogeneous and smooth. The special combination of multi-directional glass fibers in the core and cover layer fibers oriented in the direction of tension and compression yields the desired high material stiffness with a low weight per unit area.

The MultiQ product line is a modular system. The composition and thickness of the fiber composite panels offer plenty of scope for variation and permit the design to customer specification. Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials makes it possible to have panels produced in different colors and sizes up to a maximum size of 2.4 x 3.5 m.

• Building & Construction:
The thermoplastic composite materials developed by Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials are finding increasing use in the construction industry because they are in many respects markedly superior to wood, the classic material. They are above all light, weather-insensitive, dimensionally stable, and non-rotting.
Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials has therefore developed MultiQ, a solid thermoplastic composite panel, by resorting to two proven polypropylene-based materials. Used as formwork panels or scaffold planks, they boost economic efficiency on the construction site thanks to their long service life.
The innovative sandwich board has a core made of SymaLITE, while the cover layers consist of high-strength, thin and UV-resistant GMTex.
